How working with Spirit Health Club staff can help you acheive your goals
Julie, a member of Spirit Health Club Swindon, tells us how being a member helped her achieve her goals:
"I had done my first half-marathon two years ago but was unable to continue due to knee problems. Every time I tried to get back to full fitness, something or other would happen, so I asked Simon to help. He started doing one-to-one training sessions with me on a weekly or fortnightly basis in September 2006, aiming to complete a half-marathon in March 2007.
He devised a cross training programme which cut down on the long distance training runs which were causing me knee trouble and concentrated more on intense paces, like 100 metre repetitions, or using the bike, cross trainer or rower. This really improved my fitness and saved my knees.
Together we set some goals and I decided to aim to do two half-marathons one in March 07 and a second in October 07. Twelve weeks before the first run, Simon came up with a programme of what I should be doing every day, be it running, stretching or resting. I found this really helpful because it helped me focus.
During my training i had a lot to contend with. I had salmonella, shingles, and two chest infections but Simon helped me keep going. I did my half-marathon in 2 hours and 21 minutes - 26 minutes faster my first one - and i couldn't have done it without Simon's help.
I am now training for the Swindon half-marathon in October and keeping up with the weekly training sessions with Simon as much as possible. I am able to run at a pace of just over 10 minutes per mile, so next time i may be able to cut ten minutes off my time."
