Gymnasium

The gymnasium is perfect for all abilities and offers a range of aerobic machines and free weights. The aerobic machines include treadmills, steppers, bikes and rowing machine. The Precor treadmills are suitable for running or walking, which is an excellent form of aerobic exercise. Each treadmill offers 5 different programmes depending whether you are looking to lose weight or improve endurance. Alternatively you can control your speed and incline yourself by selecting the quick start option.

The bikes are always popular with members who do not enjoy running. Cycling is a great form of aerobic exercise and unlike running does not put pressure on the lower limbs. Similar to the treadmills, the bikes offer several different courses combing hills and intervals. Exercise intensity can be changed on the bikes by altering the work level, with 1 being the easiest and 10 the hardest.

The steppers are arguably the toughest piece of equipment in the gym. They are very good in improving muscle endurance in the quads and gluteals as well as improving aerobic capacity. Again each stepper has a number of programs and each is made harder by increasing the number of steps per minute, so you have to step faster.

One of the most effective exercise machines in the gym is the rower. Rowing is good because it uses both upper and lower muscle groups. You can measure your exercise in either time or distance. Speed is recorded in strides per minute (SPM). A suitable speed is around 30–35 SPM. By comparison the British Olympic rowing team (Redgrave et al) in the Olympic final traveled at approximately 60 SPM for 2000m, so that is something to aim for. The intensity can be altered, so it can feel like you are rowing against the tide!

All the aerobic machines allow you to monitor your heart rate. Many people believe that they are doing the correct intensity and duration of exercise if they come out of the gym dripping with sweat and unable to move for 3 days. This is totally incorrect. Different exercise goals require you to exercise at different intensities and the only way to do this effectively is to monitor your heart rate.

Modular weight machines mainly exercise your major muscle groups. They are all easy to use and very safe. The free weights enable you to perform almost any weights exercise. They are particularly good because they allow you to specifically focus on a muscle group you wish to exercise. To ensure that free weights are used safely ensure that you have been given proper instruction on your technique and that you do not lift a weight which is too heavy.

Swimming Pool

Swimming is a perfect form of exercise because it uses all the major muscles in the body without placing any extreme stress on the lower limbs. The water acts as a balancing aid and is therefore ideal for people suffering from back problems or joint injuries such as arthritis. In addition blood pressure remains relatively low during swimming because the body is in a supine position. The pool is also ideal for toning exercises and many advise walking in the pool because the water resistance provides a gentle resistance.

Whether it is relaxation or fitness, the swimming pool caters for both the recreational and serious swimmer. The pool is 15m long and heated to 89 degrees making it warm enough for those who wish to relax, but also comfortable for swimmers.

Spa Pool

Without doubt this is the most popular facility in the club. The bubbles and heat provide an ideal way of relaxing and easing tired muscles after a workout or hard day at work.

Sauna

The sauna provides a warm, dry atmosphere in which to relax and recuperate. The sauna cleanses the body by opening the pores of the skin, leaving you with a feeling of well being. The saunas are single sex facilities, located in each of the changing rooms.

Solarium

The weather in Manchester can be pretty lousy at times so why not try our sunbed. It costs £4 for 20 minutes and is a great way to relax and achieve an all year round body tan.

Lifestyle Consultation

Membership entitles you to a free personalised fitness assessment with a fully qualified Lifestyle Consultant. The lifestyle consultation will establish your current lifestyle and any part we can play in reducing health risks associated with that lifestyle and will subsequently help you gain the most from your membership. The consultation consists of a medical questionnaire, so we can consider any medical conditions or injuries, which may affect your fitness routine. We will then measure your blood pressure, resting pulse, body weight, body fat %, lung capacity and aerobic fitness. All these assessments are designed for all levels of fitness from the absolute beginner to a more advanced stage. Following your consultation a qualified consultant will design a programme for the gym or pool to meet your requirements and goals.

Gym Induction

Once a programme has been written you will be given one-to-one tuition on how to follow your routine. We will ensure that you fully understand how to program all the machines and to use all the weight machines. If ever you require further help a member of staff is always on hand in the gym to offer advice.

Car Parking

Usage of the club entitles you to 3 hours of free parking at the hotel. Just collect a ticket at the barrier on your way in and then a member of staff will validate your ticket when you leave the club.

Guests

Members are allowed to bring guests into the club at an additional cost and children under 5 are free. Guests are allowed access to all the clubs facilities except the solarium, which is an extra cost.
